NOTE. The 15th ISAT Annual Conference Information Day and AGM will be held at Griffith College Conference Centre, South Circular Road, Dublin on Saturday 29 August 2015.

Our Annual Conference has traditionally been held during April in Croke Park.

This year we have decided to put the Conference back to Saturday 29th August 2015, with a change in venue to GRIFFITH COLLEGE CONFERENCE CENTRE, SOUTH CIRCULAR ROAD, DUBLIN.

There are a number of reasons for delaying the Conference, the primary one being the introduction of new Driving Licence Regulations for Group 2 Drivers (Commercial) on or before 31st December 2015. These new Regulations will have long term effects on drivers with Sleep Apnoea, and we believe that our members should have the opportunity to have access to the Regulations and the manner in which they will be administered.

European Lung Foundation (ELF) Newsletter May 2014.Newsletter May 2014.

“I am very pleased to announce to you that we have a new ELF Chair-Elect. Dan Smyth, from the Irish Sleep Apnoea Trust and Sleep Apnoea Europe, was appointed to the role after a stringent interview process with the leadership of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). We had some great candidates and we are looking forward to involving them in the work of ELF in the future.

“Dan has a wealth of experience in patient advocacy. He has been an active member of the ELF Patient Advisory Committee for the last 4 years and a member of the ELF Council for 3 years. He is also a member of the ELF European Patient Ambassador Programme Steering Committee, a committee member of The Irish Lung Health Alliance and Deputy Chair of La Federation Sleep Apnea Europe.

“We have now entered a cross-over phase where I will be working closely with Dan over the coming months and I look forward to having a formal handover at the ERS International Congress in September. Dan will feature in the newsletter interview next month, so you can find out more about his plans for his three years in office from this article.

“Another key activity this month has been the launch of the SmokeHaz website. More information on this project can be found below, but I was really excited to be part of the launch, which took place in Athens on May 8. Please take a look at the site and share it with your own contacts.

“This month I have also been to Berlin for ERS’ Educational Research Seminar. During the event, I delivered a presentation on the key role of patients in the education of healthcare professionals. I was also joined by Paul Brand, a COPD patient, who spoke about his experience of teaching healthcare professionals in Scotland. It was great to see lots of eager young professionals there and we had some good discussions about how we can learn from patient experiences."

We are delighted to announce that our Honorary Secretary, Dan Smyth, has been appointed Chair of The European Lung Foundation (ELF). It is the first time in the history of ELF that a 'patient' has been appointed to this prestigious position, which has traditionally been filled by leadership figures from The European Respiratory Society (ERS).

ELF(http://www.europeanlung.org) was founded by the ERS (http://www.ersnet.org) in 2000 with the aim of bringing together patients, the public and respiratory professionals to positively influence lung health. ELF is registered as a charity in the UK, based in Sheffield, with an advocacy office in Brussels and works closely with the ERS office in Lausanne. ELF works with over 150 European Lung Health Charities, with the common goal of improving lung health. Due to the close links with ERS, ELF is also subject to Swiss regulation.

Dan will officially become 'Chair' during the ERS International Congress (6th-10th September 2014) which will take place in Munich. The ERS Congress is the largest Respiratory Congress in the world, attracting over 20,000 delegates. During the intervening period, Dan will 'shadow'; the current Chair, Monica Fletcher OBE, and he will be referred to as the 'Chair Elect'. As Chair of ELF, Dan will sit on the Executive Committee of the ERS (also Advocacy and Finance Committees), which puts him at the heart of the future development of Respiratory Medicine in Europe.

Dan has represented ISAT on the ELF Patient Advisory Committee (PAC)(http://www.europeanlung.org/en/about-us/organisation/) over the past four years and serves on the Steering Committee of the European Patient Ambassador Programme (http://www.epaponline.eu/). Two years ago he was elected by PAC to represent them on the ELF Council, for a three year term. Along with these roles he is Deputy Chair of La Federation Sleep Apnea Europe, who are based in Paris.
In  September 2013, Dan became the first 'patient' to co-chair a Symposium at the ERS International Congress held in Barcelona and will become the first 'patient' to speak to The ERS School (on NIV/CPAP patient perspective) in Munich.

This appointment is a very positive development for both Dan and ISAT, placing us in a position to positively influence developments in Sleep Disordered Breathing throughout Europe, particularly in the areas of better treatment device comfort and improvement in paediatric respiratory services. Dan will continue to act as ISAT Secretary.

Dan's public engagements begin in Paris, where he will speak about The European Patient Ambassador Programme at The Annual European Congress of Rheumatology EULAR 2014 on 14th June next.

We wish Dan every success.

Arthur O'Hara.
